The short version

Budget for a working, maintained deployment, not only a certificate. Your number of logos, sending domains, target inboxes and existing authentication work determines the scope.

Start with the deployment you actually need

Before requesting a quote, write down the domains people see in your From addresses, the logos you intend to use and the inboxes that matter to your audience. “One company” is not a sufficiently precise scope: a company may operate several brands, domains and sending platforms.

For example, a fictional retailer might send receipts from shop.example and a newsletter from news.shop.example. Ask an issuer to confirm coverage for that exact arrangement. Do not assume that one certificate covers every domain the business owns.

Separate purchases from internal work

  • Certificate: compare the certificate type, covered domains, validity period, renewal price and any service bundle.
  • Authentication: allow time to identify legitimate senders and correct alignment before enforcement.
  • Artwork: budget for access to the original vector logo, conversion and validation.
  • Hosting: decide who maintains public asset URLs and checks availability.
  • Operations: assign time for message testing, evidence collection and renewal.

An existing team may already own several of these capabilities. Record the work even when there is no new invoice, so a “cheap” certificate does not conceal an unfinished project.

Make quotes comparable

Use a small comparison sheet with columns for issuer, certificate type, domains, first-year total, renewal total, tax treatment and included assistance. Ask whether a quoted multi-year purchase involves separate certificate issuance or revalidation during that term.

Gmail accepts both VMCs and CMCs, with different checkmark outcomes. Choose based on eligibility and your display objective before comparing prices. Our certificate authority directory holds dated price references; confirm the seller’s current quote before purchasing.

Approve an owner as well as a budget

A useful approval request names the person responsible for each recurring task and states what successful testing will look like. Include a renewal reminder, the location of the final artwork and an escalation contact for DNS or hosting changes.

If the authentication inventory is incomplete, fund that discovery work first. It will make a later certificate decision more accurate and reduce the chance of paying for a certificate that sits unused. The next step is a written scope and comparable quotes, not an assumed universal BIMI price.
