Getting started

What does BIMI stand for?

Brand Indicators for Message Identification. It lets a sending domain publish a logo that supporting inbox providers can consider displaying alongside authenticated mail.

Do I need to be technical to understand BIMI?

No. The basic idea is a recognisable logo beside authenticated email. Implementation needs help from the people who manage your email, DNS, artwork, and any required certificate.

Is BIMI the same as adding a logo to my signature?

No. A signature is inside the email content. BIMI influences the sender logo shown by a supporting receiving service, after that service performs its checks.

Does BIMI guarantee more opens or better delivery?

No. Treat recognition as the direct visual benefit and measure business outcomes with your own audience. Reputation, recipient engagement, and provider rules still affect delivery.

Requirements

Can I use BIMI with DMARC set to p=none?

Monitoring-only policy is not sufficient for BIMI. Review your legitimate sending sources and move the relevant domains to full enforcement before expecting eligibility.

Do both SPF and DKIM have to pass for DMARC?

DMARC can pass with either a passing aligned SPF identity or a passing aligned DKIM identity. Configure both where possible and meet the separate requirements of your receiving providers.

Can I use a PNG, JPEG, or normal SVG?

BIMI uses SVG Tiny PS. Renaming a file or changing only its profile label is not enough. Prepare and validate a compliant file from the approved artwork.

Certificates

Do I always need a certificate?

It depends on the receiving provider. Gmail requires a VMC or CMC. Some providers accept self-asserted BIMI, subject to their other criteria. Plan around your actual audience.

Can I get BIMI without a registered trademark?

An eligible CMC may provide a route for a prior-use or modified registered mark. An issuer still needs to validate your evidence. Self-asserted BIMI is another option with more limited receiver support.

Does a CMC give me the Gmail checkmark?

No. Gmail supports CMC-based logo display, but its verification checkmark is associated with a VMC. Logo support and checkmark eligibility are different.

How much does BIMI cost?

Costs depend on the authentication work, artwork preparation, hosting, certificate route, domain coverage, and ongoing maintenance. Ask issuers and service providers for current quotes; there is no single universal BIMI price.

Implementation

Does setting up BIMI on one domain cover all my brands?

Do not assume it does. Inventory each visible From domain and confirm its DNS, authentication, artwork, and certificate coverage. Unrelated domains need their own deployment planning.

How long until the logo appears?

There is no universal timer. Issuance, DNS caching, receiver caches, reputation, and provider eligibility all affect the result. Verify each part before treating a missing logo as a waiting problem.

Why does my logo show in one inbox but not another?

Providers and apps support different behaviours and evidence requirements. Check the specific receiving environment, the actual message authentication, and that provider’s display criteria.

My checker passes. Why is my logo still missing?

A checker may validate DNS and assets without seeing the receiver’s message authentication or reputation decision. Inspect a real email and work through the receiver-specific requirements.

Maintenance

Can I simply replace the logo when we rebrand?

Coordinate with your certificate issuer first. The certificate is tied to the validated mark. Prepare the new artwork and evidence, then update hosted assets and DNS in a planned sequence.

Does a visible logo mean an email is safe?

A logo is a recognition cue, not a guarantee about the email’s content. Continue to verify unexpected requests. The absence of a logo also does not prove that a message is malicious.
