The short version
Measure technical health, visible coverage and business outcomes separately. A working record is not proof of universal display, and a campaign improvement is not proof that BIMI caused it.
Start with configuration health
Create a baseline of what you can directly verify: published records, reachable files, certificate dates and authentication results from representative mail. Assign an owner and a review cadence to each item.
Report these as operational checks. “Our tested sending streams pass the agreed checks” is more precise than “BIMI works for all customers”. A certificate-log entry in the BIMI Data observatory is issuance evidence; it does not establish successful message delivery or visible logo coverage.
Record observed display with its context
Use a repeatable set of recipient accounts and applications. Save the sender stream, provider, app, test time and result. Repeat after important changes rather than collecting screenshots only on launch day.
A useful report might say “logo observed in these six test contexts” and list them. It should not extrapolate six accounts into a percentage of the entire audience without a sampling method. Include failures and unknowns so the team can improve coverage instead of selecting only successful screenshots.
Keep marketing analysis separate
Subject lines, offers, audience composition, send time and deliverability can change campaign results. Apple’s Mail Privacy Protection also affects whether senders can observe message opens. Treat raw open rates as an imperfect signal.
If the business wants to assess recognition, consider a clearly scoped customer study or a controlled campaign design with your analytics team. Use downstream actions that fit the objective, and explain the experiment’s limitations. Do not manufacture an uplift figure from a before-and-after comparison with many simultaneous changes.
Use a three-part review
- Operational: what passed, what changed and what needs an owner?
- Display: where was the logo observed, absent or untested?
- Business: what outcome was measured, with what method and uncertainty?
Agree the review format before launch. It gives IT, marketing and leadership a shared vocabulary and helps keep a valuable infrastructure improvement from becoming an unsupported performance claim.
